First Religious Society Church

Soaring Federal-era church with a 165-foot wooden steeple

Address 26 Pleasant St, Newburyport

The most striking building in downtown Newburyport — a brick Federal church of 1801 with a tall, four-stage wooden steeple that is visible from the river a mile away. The clock in the tower has been keeping the town's time since 1810.

The congregation, Unitarian Universalist, traces its roots to 1725. The interior keeps its original box pews and a Hook & Hastings organ from 1869. Generally open weekday mornings; check the chalkboard at the door.
