The brick-and-timber walk runs along the south bank of the Merrimack from the bottom of Market Square out toward the harbour, past the marinas, the Black Cow tavern, and Waterfront Park. The river is broad here — half a mile across to Salisbury Beach — and the sunsets behind the swing bridge are among the best in the state.
In summer there are evening concerts in the park, river cruises and whale-watching trips from the Hilton Marina docks, and a small Coast Guard cutter usually moored at the harbourmaster's pier.
