Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary protects a mix of salt marsh, beach, pine woods, freshwater pond, and heathland on the bay side of town. Its five miles of trails make it one of the easiest places on the Outer Cape to slow down and actually look at the landscape.
Birders should put it high on the list, but it works for non-specialists too. The trails are varied, the visitor centre is useful, and the marsh views help explain why Wellfleet is more than an ocean-beach town.
