Wellfleet

Outer Cape oyster town with national seashore beaches, salt-marsh trails, and a working harbor.

Wellfleet sits on the Outer Cape between ocean, harbor, salt marsh, and pine woods. It is quieter than Provincetown, but it has a strong enough identity of its own: oysters, galleries, kettle ponds, surf beaches, and a working harbor that still feels connected to the tides.

The town's best days are split between the Cape Cod National Seashore and the bay side. Marconi Beach gives you Atlantic dunes and surf, Great Island Trail gives you a long, sandy walk into marsh and bay country, and Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the Cape's better nature stops.

Food matters here too. Wellfleet oysters are famous for good reason, and they give the town a taste memory as clear as its landscape. Come outside the most crowded summer weekends if you can; the Outer Cape is better when it has room to breathe.
