Rachel Carson Statue

A bronze statue of Rachel Carson stands near the WHOI campus, honouring the marine biologist and author who spent time in Woods Hole during the formative years of her career. Carson is best known for Silent Spring (1962), the book that launched the modern environmental movement, but her earlier work — The Sea Around Us and The Edge of the Sea — grew directly from her research in and around these waters.

The statue, by the sculptor Wendy Ross, depicts Carson seated with a notebook, looking out toward the harbour. It was installed in 2013. The surrounding area offers good views of the WHOI dock and the tidal passage between Great Harbor and Eel Pond.

A story
Rachel Carson spent several summers in Woods Hole during the 1930s and 1940s, working at the Bureau of Fisheries laboratory that later became NOAA. Her experience of the sea here directly informed The Sea Around Us (1951), which spent 86 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and remains the most widely read book about oceanography ever written.
