The 34-acre estate of Charles Stewart Mott, the founder of the Mott Foundation and once GM's largest shareholder, sits a short distance north of downtown. The 1916 arts-and-crafts house is open for limited tours; the gardens — formal beds, orchards, working hops yard, beekeeping demonstrations — are open most of the year and free to wander.
Mott was a serial mayor of Flint as well as an industrialist; the foundation he set up with his fortune still funds much of the city's cultural infrastructure, including the Flint Institute of Arts next door at the Mott Foundation building.
