Great Lakes National Cemetery

National cemetery for Michigan veterans, north of town

Established in 2005 on a former state-forest site north of Holly, Great Lakes National Cemetery is one of the largest VA-administered cemeteries in the country, with a capacity for nearly 250,000 interments. The rolling 544 acres are quietly landscaped, with stone walls, simple monuments, and the long rows of identical white markers that mark a national cemetery anywhere in the United States.

Visitors are welcome at any time. Memorial Day and Veterans Day services draw large crowds. If you are passing through Holly with any interest in 20th-century American history, it is a sobering and well-tended stop.
