The Holly Recreation Area, a few miles east of town and astride I-75, is the larger and quieter cousin of Seven Lakes. It covers 8,000 acres of rolling moraine country with a dozen small lakes scattered through the woods, two designated swimming beaches, and over 30 miles of hiking and mountain bike trails. Wildlife is good: deer, foxes, plenty of birds.
Heron Lake has a pleasant sandy beach and a modern campground; McGinnis Lake is the quieter spot for paddlers. The Renaissance Festival site sits within the park boundary and runs every weekend from late August through early October — a noisy, costumed, beer-sodden affair worth one visit even if you find Ren faires faintly ridiculous.
