Quincy Mine is the headline sight above Hancock. The mine worked from the 1840s into the 20th century and became known as "Old Reliable" for its long run of dividends. Its shafts went thousands of feet into the copper-bearing rock, and the surviving surface buildings make the scale easier to grasp than a paragraph ever can.
Tours usually focus on the hoist house and underground workings. Even if you only walk the grounds, this is the place that turns the Keweenaw from a pretty northern peninsula into an industrial landscape with a deep, specific story.
