Houghton and Hancock face each other across the Portage Lake Ship Canal in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. They read as one town split by water: Houghton has Michigan Tech and the larger downtown; Hancock climbs the hill on the north side and points toward the old copper country.
The pair is worth stopping for because the Keweenaw's story is unusually strong. The Quincy Mine is one of the best places in the region to understand deep copper mining, while the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum explains why this peninsula mattered geologically. The Portage Lake Lift Bridge gives the towns their shared landmark.
This is also a northern college town with serious winters. Come for mines, minerals, canal views, snow culture, and as a base for the Keweenaw Peninsula rather than for a polished city break.
