Houghton Lake

Michigan's largest inland lake, used for boating, swimming, and ice fishing.

Houghton Lake is broad, shallow, and busy in the easygoing way of northern Michigan cottage country. The usual day is not complicated: rent a pontoon, fish for walleye or panfish, swim from a public beach, or just idle along the shore looking at cabins and docks.

In winter the same lake becomes the town's frozen stage. Ice fishing and snowmobiling are part of the local identity, and the lake feels much bigger once the boats are gone.
