Houghton Lake

Northern Michigan lake resort town on the state's largest inland lake.

Houghton Lake is a small resort community wrapped around Michigan's largest inland lake. It is not polished, and that is part of the point: this is pontoon boats, fishing docks, snowmobiles, family cabins, and a winter carnival built around ice fishing.

The lake is the reason to come. In summer, people rent boats, fish, swim, and drift into the Muskegon River at the north end. In winter, the rhythm moves onto the ice, especially during Tip-Up Town USA, a long-running January festival of snowmobiles, fishing contests, and cold-weather local pride.

Houghton Lake will not beat Traverse City for restaurants or Petoskey for charm. But if you are already in central northern Michigan with a spare day, the lake, the river, the Historic Village, and a few low-key outdoor stops make it more rewarding than another day on the highway.
