Tip-Up Town USA is Houghton Lake at its most itself: a winter carnival on and around the ice, with fishing contests, snowmobile events, parades, and a cheerful refusal to treat January as a reason to stay indoors.
It is seasonal, of course. Outside the festival dates, it is still useful as a clue to the town's personality: Houghton Lake is a lake place in summer, but it does not shut down when the water freezes.
