East Lansing is the college town built up around Michigan State University, an independent city today but functionally a continuation of Lansing. Grand River Avenue is the main commercial drag — book shops, bars, cafés, and the kind of pizza-by-the-slice operations every American university town has.
It is more energetic and younger than central Lansing. The walk south from Grand River into the historic core of the MSU campus is the best 15 minutes in the metro area. Most touring shows, big concerts, and the Wharton Center performing arts happen here.
