Getting Around

There are no motor vehicles on Mackinac Island — this is the rule that defines the place. Everything moves at the pace of a horse or a bicycle, which turns out to be exactly the right speed for an island eight miles around.

Bicycle rental shops line Main Street at similar prices; grab one as soon as you step off the ferry. Horse-drawn taxis — open carriages that function like conventional cabs — are available near the docks and will take you anywhere on the island, including up to the fort. Carriage tours of the island are also available and are worth considering if you want commentary along with the scenery. For those who prefer to walk, the compact downtown is entirely manageable on foot, and many of the interior trails are pleasant hikes. There are no traffic lights, no exhaust fumes, and no parking problems.
