The Mission Church at the corner of Huron and Tuscott Streets is the oldest surviving church in Michigan, built in 1829 by Protestant missionaries who were hoping to convert the island's Native American and mixed-heritage population. The building is a simple, white-painted clapboard structure that looks entirely out of place beside the Victorian resort hotels that surrounded it a generation later — a reminder that Mackinac's history as a frontier mission settlement preceded its history as a tourist destination.
The church is still occasionally used for services and is open to visitors. The Mission House next door, built the same year, is now a private resort hotel. Together they form one of the quieter historic corners of the island, away from the fudge shops and bicycle rentals of Main Street.
