The Muskegon Museum of Art is one of the better regional art museums in Michigan, with a permanent collection spanning American and European painting from the 17th century to the present. The American collection is particularly strong in 19th- and early-20th-century work; there are also pieces by Hopper, Wyeth, and a range of Michigan and Great Lakes regional artists.
The building, originally funded by Charles Hackley in 1912, is a neat neoclassical block in the downtown civic district. Admission is modest and the galleries are rarely crowded. A good option for a rainy day, or as a complement to the history-heavy waterfront sites.
