Muskegon State Park occupies the sand dunes and channel between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan, about 5 km north of the city. In summer it is a beach and camping park — the Lake Michigan shoreline here has classic Great Lakes dune beaches, wide and sandy, with the cold clear water of the lake stretching west to the horizon. The park has several kilometres of frontage on both Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake.
In winter the park operates one of the only luge tracks in the United States — an official international-standard course open to the public for guided runs. No experience required; attendants show you the technique and send you down solo. Cross-country ski trails also run through the park's forested interior. The luge and ski season runs roughly December through February depending on snowfall.
