The Devil's Kettle is a waterfall on the Brule River in Judge C.R. Magney State Park, about 14 miles up the shore from Grand Marais. The river, dark with tannin, splits in two against a wedge of rhyolite at the lip of the falls. The eastern half drops as a normal waterfall into a pool below. The western half pours into a deep pothole — the "kettle" — and disappears.
The hike is about 1.2 miles each way from the parking lot, mostly on a wide trail with a final stretch of wooden stairs down into the river gorge. Plan an hour and a half, more if you continue downriver on the longer loop. The viewing platforms are above the falls, with the western kettle directly below.
