Things to Do

The first stop is the Grand Marais Light at the end of the harbour breakwater — a short, exhilarating walk over Lake Superior. The Cook County History Museum is in the old lightkeeper's house just above the harbour and ties together the fishing, voyageur, and Anishinaabe history of the North Shore. Out toward the Gunflint Trail, the Devil's Kettle waterfall in Judge C.R. Magney State Park is the canonical day hike — half the river vanishes mysteriously into a pothole and reappears no one knows where. Eagle Mountain is Minnesota's highest point, a moderate hike with summit views. Naniboujou Lodge, 15 miles up the shore, is an art-deco supper club designed in the 1920s for a private celebrity members' club. The Pincushion Mountain overlook just inland of town is the easiest way to see the whole harbour from above. In town, the North House Folk School runs short courses in traditional crafts — boatbuilding, weaving, baking, blacksmithing — and is open to wander.
