Pincushion Mountain

A 1,000-foot Sawtooth Mountain summit just inland of Grand Marais with a panoramic harbour view.

Pincushion Mountain is a bald-topped peak in the Sawtooth Range, about 3 miles inland from Grand Marais. The summit is 1,000 feet above lake level and 1,602 feet above sea level, reached by a flat 0.6-mile spur trail from the Pincushion Trailhead off the Gunflint Trail. It is one of the easier hikes on the North Shore and one of the best for views: from the bare rocky top you look straight down over the curving Grand Marais harbour, the breakwater lighthouse, and Artists' Point.

In winter, the surrounding trail network is groomed for cross-country skiing and is one of the better ski systems on the North Shore. The trailhead parking is signed off the Gunflint Trail (County Road 12) about 2 miles north of Highway 61.
