The Shockaloe Horse Trail winds 23 miles through the heart of Bienville National Forest, accessible from a trailhead off Highway 80 east of Forest. Designed primarily for equestrian use, the trail is equally popular with hikers who want a substantial route through genuine backcountry forest — longleaf and loblolly pine, hardwood creek bottoms, and bottomland forest along several stream crossings.
The trail is clearly marked and loops through the forest with a primitive campsite at roughly the midpoint. Spring and summer bring insects and ticks in quantity; bug repellent is essential. After heavy rain, low-lying sections can become very muddy. The best conditions are October through April. No permit is required; the area is managed by the Bienville National Forest ranger district.
