Forest

Small Mississippi county seat near Bienville National Forest, known locally for its Wing Dang Doodle Festival.

Forest is a small town in Scott County, Mississippi, sitting off I-20 about halfway between Jackson and Meridian. It is primarily an agricultural community and the county seat.

The town's claim to fame is the Annual Wing Dang Doodle Festival, held every September, which celebrates chicken wings and blues music. Visitors can judge the wing cooking contest, which reportedly produces some of the best wings in the region.

For nature enthusiasts, the Bienville National Forest surrounds the town and contains several worthwhile destinations. The Bienville Pines Scenic Area preserves 223 acres of old-growth longleaf pine, one of the rarest forest types in the South. The Harrell Prairie Botanical Area is a rare remnant tallgrass prairie, at its best in late summer when the wildflowers peak. The Shockaloe Horse Trail (off Hwy 80) winds 23 miles through the forest, open to hikers and horses; bring bug repellent in warm months. The Moore Lookout Tower north of town is a surviving historic fire lookout on the National Register of Historic Places.
