City Hall Observation Deck

Free 30th-floor observation deck — one of the city's best free views

Kansas City City Hall, completed in 1937 in Art Deco style, has a public observation deck on the 30th floor that is free and open to visitors on weekdays. It is consistently one of the least-known and best free experiences in the city. The deck offers unobstructed 360-degree views: north across the Missouri River into Clay County, south toward the Plaza and Brookside, east across the grid of the old city, and west into Kansas. On clear days the view extends 20 or more miles in each direction.

The building itself is worth examining at street level — the carved limestone facade, the bronze fittings at the entrance, the art deco elevator lobbies inside. This is one of the finest civic buildings from the New Deal era in Missouri. The observation deck visit takes no more than 30 minutes and is easily combined with a walk through the nearby City Market or the riverfront.
