Freight House

Restored 1888 railroad freight building now housing food hall and events

The Freight House is a restored 1888 railroad freight facility adjacent to Union Station, converted into a food hall, event space, and restaurant complex. The long brick building with its vaulted timber ceilings retains the industrial bones of its original function and provides a dramatic setting for the mix of food vendors and sit-down restaurants inside.

The food hall concept here works better than most: a mix of local operators rather than national chains, ranging from high-end to casual. On Friday evenings a street food and music market sets up outside. The building is integral to the Union Station district — walk out of the main station, head east, and the Freight House is immediately adjacent. Several of Kansas City's better food vendors are anchored here, making it a practical lunch or dinner stop when visiting the western downtown area.
