Historic Independence Square is the old civic center of Independence, with small shops around the Jackson County courthouse. The courthouse was modeled after Philadelphia's Independence Hall and includes Harry S. Truman's former courtroom and office.
It works best as a short walk combined with the nearby Truman and frontier-trails sites. The square gives Independence's presidential and westward-expansion history a clear town-center setting rather than just a set of separate museums.
