The Mutual Musicians Foundation is the oldest continually operating jazz club in the United States, housed in the same brick building in the 18th and Vine district since 1917. The building was originally the local union hall for Black musicians, who were excluded from the white musicians' union. The after-hours jam sessions that became its hallmark began informally — after the regular clubs closed at 2am, musicians would come here to play through the night, sharpening their skills in front of each other.
Today the tradition continues. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Foundation opens at midnight and stays open until the music stops — typically around 5am. There is no formal set list; the sessions are genuine jam sessions where musicians trade off and push each other. Admission is a few dollars at the door. Bring cash. This is not a tourist attraction dressed up as a jazz club — it is an actual jazz club that has survived for over a century, and on a good night it is extraordinary.
