National Frontier Trails Museum

Starting point of the three great overland trails west

Independence, Missouri — just east of Kansas City — was the official departure point for the Santa Fe Trail, the Oregon Trail, and the California Trail, the three main overland routes that carried settlers and traders to the American West in the 19th century. The National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence tells this story through artifacts, documents, and first-person accounts from the people who made the journeys.

The museum holds original trail journals, period equipment, and a detailed account of the logistics of wagon train travel — the cost, the duration, the dangers. The surrounding area in Independence has interpretive markers where the trails converged and where the wagon trains assembled. For anyone interested in the history of westward expansion — and Kansas City's role as the gateway city that supplied and organized it — the museum and the trail site together provide context that the city's downtown institutions do not fully cover.
