Natural Bridge Falls

Boulder River waterfall and limestone gorge picnic area south of Big Timber.

Natural Bridge Falls is the standout day trip from Big Timber. The Boulder River cuts through limestone south of town, dropping through a gorge where water, rock, and broken natural-bridge formations make a compact but impressive stop.

The picnic area is day-use only and easy to visit by car in good weather. Walk the viewpoints, take your time along the river, and do not treat it as just a photo pull-off. The drive up the Boulder River is part of why the trip works.

A story
The old natural bridge that gave the site its name collapsed, but the Boulder River still disappears and reappears through fractured limestone depending on water levels. In high runoff the falls are loud and direct; later in the season the geology becomes easier to read.
