When to Go

The best months to visit Billings are late May through September. Summers are warm and dry — July temperatures average around 28°C (82°F) — with long days and easy access to the surrounding countryside. Thunderstorms roll through in late afternoon during June and July but rarely last long.

Spring (April–May) can be unpredictable, with late snowstorms possible well into April. Autumn (September–October) is excellent — cooler temperatures, golden colours in the river valleys, and the start of hunting season if that interests you. Winters are cold and can be harsh, with temperatures dropping well below freezing and occasional blizzards, though the city keeps functioning. The Little Bighorn Battlefield and Pictograph Caves are open year-round but most enjoyable in the warmer months.

The Midland Empire Fair and Rodeo (late July/early August) is the biggest annual event, drawing crowds from across the region.
