The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is a vast high-country landscape of jagged peaks, alpine lakes, forests, and open tundra north and east of Yellowstone. It is one of the wildest mountain areas reachable from Cooke City.
Most visitors only glimpse the edge from the Beartooth Highway, but hikers and backcountry travelers can go much deeper. Weather changes quickly at altitude, so treat even day hikes with respect.
