Cooke City

Tiny Beartooth mining town and high-country base at Yellowstone's northeast edge.

Cooke City is a tiny mountain town wedged between the northeast edge of Yellowstone and the Beartooth high country. It would be easy to dismiss it as a gate on the road, but that misses the point: this is a rough-edged mining settlement turned wilderness base, with snow deep enough to define the winter and some of the best road scenery in the Rockies at its door.

In summer, Beartooth Highway is the headline, curling east over alpine tundra toward Red Lodge. Shorter stops like Clay Butte Fire Lookout and Clarks Fork Picnic Area turn the drive into a proper day. In town, Cooke City Montana Museum gives the mining story behind the weathered storefronts.

Cooke City is seasonal and practical. Roads close, snow lingers, services are limited, and Yellowstone's Lamar Valley will always pull some of the attention west. Still, if you are already in this corner of Montana, spending a day here beats treating it as a fuel stop.
