The Beartooth Highway is the big reason many travelers first hear of Cooke City. US 212 climbs from the Yellowstone side into a high world of tundra, glacial lakes, switchbacks, and long views before dropping toward Red Lodge.
Do not rush it as a connector road. Pull off for the overlooks, carry warm layers, and check seasonal closures; snow can shape the pass long after lowland Montana feels like summer.
