Lake McDonald is the broad, reflective welcome to Glacier National Park from the west. The lake runs for about ten miles through a classic U-shaped glacial valley, with wooded shores, colored stones in the shallows, and mountains closing in toward the northeast.
It is easy to underestimate because it is so accessible. That is exactly its strength: you can stop for a shoreline view, use it as the start of the Going-to-the-Sun Road experience, or linger around Apgar and Lake McDonald Lodge before committing to longer hikes. Early morning is best, when the water is still and the traffic has not yet taken over.
