Makoshika State Park

Montana's largest state park, with badland formations, trails, and dinosaur fossils.

Makoshika State Park is the reason Glendive belongs on the map. Montana's largest state park protects a rough badlands landscape of clay hills, caprock, dry washes, and pale slopes that catch the light beautifully at the ends of the day.

The park is also fossil country. Its visitor centre explains the Hell Creek Formation and displays finds from a landscape where Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus rex, and other prehistoric life have been found. Short trails make it easy to get into the formations without planning a full wilderness day.
