Old Jail Museum (Sanders County Jail)

The old Sanders County Jail, built in 1907, now operates as a small local history museum run by volunteers. It is one of the better-preserved examples of an early-twentieth-century county jail in western Montana — the original iron cells are still in place, along with displays on the region's logging, mining, and railroad history.

For a small-town museum, it has genuine substance: the exhibits are thoughtful about the transition this part of Montana went through between the 1880s and the 1930s, when the timber industry arrived, the Northern Pacific Railroad pushed through, and the dam changed the river. Hours are limited and vary by season — call ahead or check with the visitor center before making it a special trip.

A story
The 1907 jail was built with a combined jailer's residence attached — the jailer and his family literally lived next door to the cells, sharing a wall with the prisoners. It was a common arrangement in small-town Montana, where the county couldn't afford separate facilities, and it meant the jailer's wife often cooked meals for inmates.
