The six-story Hotel Nevada opened in 1929 and was the tallest building in the state for over a decade — a remarkable claim for a copper-mining town this remote. It was also Nevada's first fireproof building, which mattered when most of the competition was wood-frame construction. The hotel still operates, with a casino on the ground floor and basic rooms above. The lobby has the feel of a place that has been continuously open since Prohibition, which is more or less true.
