The Nevada Northern Railway Museum in East Ely is one of the best-preserved historic railroad complexes in the United States. Kennecott built the yard to service the copper mines, and when operations wound down in the late 1970s, the company donated the entire property — locomotives, rolling stock, shop buildings, and tools — to a non-profit foundation. Nothing was cleared out, nothing was scrapped. What you walk into is essentially a working railway yard from 1978 that just happens to be open to the public.
The machine shop, the depot, and the roundhouse are all intact. Steam locomotives run weekend excursion trips along the original ore line, with special events including the Ghost Train around Halloween. Allow at least two hours; the yard is larger than it looks from the entrance.
