Redstone Rocket

Parked on a concrete pad in the center of town stands an actual Redstone ballistic missile — the same type that carried Alan Shepard into space in 1961. Warren acquired it in 1971 as a tribute to native son Alan Shepard, America's first astronaut, who grew up in nearby Derry. The rocket is painted in its original military markings and stands roughly 21 metres tall, making it impossible to miss as you drive through on Route 25. It is one of the more surreal roadside monuments in New England, and the reason most people pull off the highway here.

story: > Alan Shepard was born in East Derry, NH, about 90 km southeast of Warren. When Warren received the Redstone in 1971, the town was celebrating one of New Hampshire's most famous sons — the man who, on 5 May 1961, became the first American in space with a 15-minute suborbital flight aboard Freedom 7.
