Maplewood Cemetery

Historic Freehold cemetery with Civil War graves, local politicians, and a good sense of town memory

Maplewood Cemetery began as Freehold Cemetery in the 1850s and later absorbed neighbouring Greenlawn Cemetery, leaving a broad, quiet burial ground just west of the centre. It is not a grand tourist monument, but it gives Freehold a useful historical layer: veterans from several wars, New Jersey politicians, judges, and old local families are all part of the record here.

For travellers interested in town history, the cemetery is best treated as a short walk rather than a destination in itself. Look for the older stones and the graves of public figures such as New Jersey governors Joel Parker and Joseph D. Bedle, then connect it with the courthouse, St. Peter's, and Monmouth Battlefield for a fuller picture of Freehold's 19th-century world.
