Freehold

Central New Jersey borough known for Bruce Springsteen roots, colonial history, and Monmouth battlefield nearby.

Freehold is a small borough in central New Jersey, best known as Bruce Springsteen's hometown — he grew up here, attended Freehold High School, and immortalised the town in "My Hometown." The connection draws a steady trickle of Springsteen fans who come to see the places he sang about.

Beyond the rock and roll pilgrimage, Freehold has a genuinely pleasant downtown centred on Main Street, with a good mix of restaurants and shops. The town dates to the colonial era, and the Battle of Monmouth was fought just outside town in 1778 — one of the largest engagements of the American Revolution. The battlefield site is now a state park with walking trails and interpretive markers.

Freehold Raceway, one of the oldest harness racing tracks in the country, operates on the edge of town and has been running races since 1853.

Guide

Getting There

Freehold sits about an hour south of New York City by car on the Garden State Parkway — take exit 123 and follow Route 9 south, then Route 33 west into town. Traffic can add time on weekends, particularly in summer.

NJ Transit operates a bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan to Freehold, with the 139 route making the trip in roughly 90 minutes depending on traffic. Fares are reasonable and buses run throughout the day, making a day trip from the city very manageable. There is no train service directly to Freehold; if you're coming by rail, the closest station is on the North Jersey Coast Line at Aberdeen-Matawan, about 15 miles north.
