St. Peter's Episcopal Church

One of New Jersey's oldest parishes, with a handsome 1835 Greek Revival church on Church Street

St. Peter's Episcopal Church has been a presence in Freehold since 1702, making it one of the oldest parishes in New Jersey. The current building, completed in 1835, is a restrained Greek Revival structure — white clapboard with a colonnaded portico and a modest steeple — that fits naturally into the character of the old town. The graveyard contains graves dating to the colonial era, and several soldiers from the Battle of Monmouth are buried here.

The churchyard is open and worth a slow walk. The old headstones carry the familiar colonial-era imagery — hourglasses, winged skulls, weeping willows — and the inscriptions give the town a human scale that the battlefield markers and historical plaques can't quite provide. St. Peter's is still an active congregation, so the building itself is not always open to visitors, but the exterior and grounds are accessible at any time.
