Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath

Flat, scenic towpath through Lambertville good for walking, jogging, and cycling

The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park passes directly through Lambertville, giving the town a peaceful, car-free green corridor right through its centre. The towpath is flat, well-maintained, and shaded in summer, making it equally good for a short stroll or a longer bicycle ride. The canal itself — with its still water reflecting the trees — is one of the prettiest features of the town.

From Lambertville you can walk north toward Stockton and Frenchtown or south toward Trenton. The path is unpaved stone dust for most of its length and accessible to road bikes and hybrids without difficulty. Canoe rentals are available seasonally if you want to explore from the water rather than the bank.

A story
The Delaware and Raritan Canal was completed in 1834 to move goods — primarily coal — between the Delaware River and New York harbour. It carried traffic for over 50 years before rail made it obsolete. Today the towpath is one of the finest flat walking and cycling routes in New Jersey, running 70 miles from Frenchtown to Trenton.
