A tall block of Indiana limestone at the head of Stockton Street, the Battle Monument commemorates Washington's victory at Princeton on 3 January 1777. The carved frieze by sculptor Frederick MacMonnies, finished in 1922, shows Washington leading his troops with Liberty driving him forward — slightly theatrical, but earnestly done.
The monument was deliberately sited away from the battlefield itself so it would stand as a focal point at the entrance to the town. It is easy to walk past — most visitors do — but worth a stop for the carving, particularly the smaller scenes of camp life and the death of General Mercer along the base.
