Princeton Garden Theatre

1920 art-house cinema, an independent neighbourhood theatre

The Garden Theatre on Nassau Street opened in 1920 and has been showing films ever since — through silent pictures, Cold War double bills, the multiplex era, and a near-closure that was rescued in 2014 when Princeton University took over the operation and partnered with the non-profit Renew Theaters. It now runs a programme heavily weighted toward independent, foreign-language, and documentary films, with classic-cinema repertory in between.

A small, single-screen room, lovingly restored, with the original organ still in the wings. Cheaper than the multiplex on Route 1 and infinitely more pleasant. Check the listings — the Garden is the only cinema in town and one of the better art-houses in this part of the state.
