Eagle Rock Reservation

Eagle Rock Reservation is a 400-acre wooded park on the crest of the First Watchung Mountain, straddling the line between West Orange and Montclair. The reservation's great draw is the view: from the Eagle Rock overlook, the Manhattan skyline appears as a dense row of towers on the horizon, 14 miles east across the New Jersey lowlands. On clear days the view extends from the George Washington Bridge in the north to the Verrazano Bridge in the south — one of the best distant views of New York City accessible by public transport or car.

The park has good walking trails through oak and maple forest, and the old carriage roads have been converted to easy hiking paths. The Turtle Back Zoo, a well-regarded regional zoo, occupies the South Mountain Reservation directly adjacent — the two parks together make a fine half-day excursion.

A story
Eagle Rock was the site of a pavilion and scenic overlook popular with day-trippers from Newark and New York in the early 20th century, when the Essex County park commission was developing the Watchung ridgeline as public green space. A memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks was built here in 2002 — the overlook faces directly toward lower Manhattan, 14 miles east, giving it a particular significance as a place of mourning.
