Ghost Ranch is the classic Abiquiu excursion: a sweep of red cliffs and desert mesas that became closely linked with Georgia O'Keeffe after she began spending summers here in the 1930s. It is now an education and retreat centre, but day visitors can use the welcome centre, museums, trails, and tours.
The ranch is also strong on natural history. Fossils from this area helped make Ghost Ranch famous among paleontologists, and the small museum explains why Triassic bones turn up in this dramatic landscape. If you only have time for one walk, choose a trail that gets you above the valley floor; the colour and shape of the cliffs are the whole point.
