Abiquiu

Small northern New Mexico village framed by red cliffs, Ghost Ranch, and Georgia O'Keeffe country.

Abiquiu is a small village in northern New Mexico, but the landscape around it is anything but modest. Red cliffs, pale desert flats, the Chama River, and the blue line of Pedernal make the area feel instantly familiar if you know Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings. She lived here for decades, and it is still hard to separate the place from her eye.

The village itself is quiet. The main reasons to come are Ghost Ranch, the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, Abiquiu Lake, and the rough road out to the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. This is not a town to rush through on the way to Taos or Santa Fe; the slow distances are the point.

Bring water, check opening times, and book ahead where needed. Some of the best sights here require reservations, dirt-road driving, or both.

Things to Do

Abiquiu's best sights sit in the surrounding red-rock country rather than on a town square. Ghost Ranch and the O'Keeffe house are the essentials; the monastery is for travellers willing to follow a long dirt road into the Chama canyon country.
