Ski Cloudcroft is a small, family-oriented ski area with three lifts and a handful of runs. It is not a serious mountain destination, but it provides genuine skiing within a few hours' drive of El Paso, Roswell, and Alamogordo. The area is best suited to beginners and families — there is a ski school and rental equipment available.
Snow is the variable — Cloudcroft is in a semi-arid climate, and snowfall can be light and patchy. The ski area typically operates from late November through February when conditions allow, but it is worth checking conditions before making the trip. The elevation does give it a longer season than you might expect for this latitude.
