Santa Fe Depot

The 1915 Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe depot is a low pueblo-revival building on the north side of Magdalena's main drag. It has been preserved as a small library, museum and visitor centre, with photographs and railway-era memorabilia inside and a Santa Fe boxcar parked on the disused tracks outside.

Open Tuesday to Saturday with limited hours; admission free. Even when closed, the outside is worth a five-minute stop for a sense of the town's railhead past.

A story
From 1885 to 1971 this was the shipping point for cattle driven 125 miles east from Arizona along what was nicknamed the Beefsteak Trail — at its peak the largest cattle railhead in the United States. The last cattle drive to Magdalena rolled in in 1970; the line was abandoned the following year.
